One way to extend the life of your water heater is to replace the anode rod. The anode rod is a tiny rod on the inside of your water heater that helps reduce the effects of corrosive elements in your water that can eat away at the inside of your water heater.
Without an anode rod, the corrosive elements in your water would eat away at the insides of your tank. The anode rod is made from weaker metals than the metal your tank is made of and keeps your tank from being directly affected by corrosion.
After a while, though, your anode rod gets diminished to a thin wire and the inside of your tank starts corroding, which is what finally causes leaks on the heater.
If you have your anode rod checked by a plumber every 3-4 years and replace it when it starts eroding, you can extend the life of your water heater to potentially beyond 20 years.
