Anode Rods: The Secret To Keeping Your Water Heater Running Longer

Did you know your electric water heater is only built to last about 12 years? After that, you’re really dealing with a ticking time bomb and your water heater could go out at any time.

This means costly leaks and an emergency replacement, which is always more expensive than replacing it before it breaks.

(If you don’t know how old your water heater is, check out this article to find out.)

One way to extend the life of your water heater is to replace the anode rod. The anode rod is a tiny rod on the inside of your water heater that helps reduce the effects of corrosive elements in your water that can eat away at the inside of your water heater.

Without an anode rod, the corrosive elements in your water would eat away at the insides of your tank. The anode rod is made from weaker metals than the metal your tank is made of and keeps your tank from being directly affected by corrosion.

After a while, though, your anode rod gets diminished to a thin wire and the inside of your tank starts corroding, which is what finally causes leaks on the heater.

If you have your anode rod checked by a plumber every 3-4 years and replace it when it starts eroding, you can extend the life of your water heater to potentially beyond 20 years.

Adding 8-10 years to your water heater isn’t bad, huh?

Get us to check your anode rod the next time you call for service. It’ll take about 15 minutes, and if you need a new one, we can install it right then. This will add several years to the life of your water heater.
